THE TIMES TABLES CORNER
Times tables practice, one small step at a time
Times tables are more useful when they make sense. Start with equal groups, look for patterns and build towards recalling facts without counting every time.
Start with a picture
An array of buttons or a drawing of equal groups makes multiplication visible. Turn the array around to explore why 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 have the same total.
Connect a new fact to a familiar one
If 5 × 7 is secure, add one more group of seven to find 6 × 7. If 4 × 8 is familiar, double it to find 8 × 8. Let children explain the connection.
Mix the facts gradually
A child may know a table in order but find a single fact harder to retrieve. Try a small mix of familiar and less familiar questions. Return to tricky facts another day.
Keep speed in its place
Give thinking time while a fact is new. Once recall is becoming comfortable, short checks can help identify what needs revisiting. Stop before frustration takes over.
