Year 1 Maths Worksheets & Practice

Make maths something children can see and touch. Year 1 practice works well when counting, talking and moving come before a page of written questions.

A happy start with numbers

Number & place value

Practise counting forwards and backwards to 100. Ask what comes before or after a number, then find it on a number line.

Addition & subtraction

Explore number bonds within 20 with counters. Move objects as you add and take away, saying what has changed.

Multiplication & division

Make equal groups and share objects fairly. Try pairs of socks or groups of five building blocks.

Fractions

Fold paper into equal halves and quarters. Talk about why equal parts matter.

Measurement

Compare longer, shorter, heavier and lighter. Read o’clock and half past times in everyday routines.

Shape & reasoning

Find familiar flat and solid shapes at home. Ask your child to explain how they sorted them.

A small idea to try today

Put ten small objects on the table. Hide some under a cup. Can your child work out how many are hiding? Swap roles and explain your thinking.

A parent-friendly overview, not a complete curriculum checklist. Schools may sequence learning differently. Based on the mathematics programmes of study for England; checked August 2026.
