A calmer guide to Year 4 MTC preparation
The Multiplication Tables Check looks at fluent recall of multiplication facts. Preparation can start with a conversation about what your child already knows, rather than a race against a timer.
What is the MTC?
The official check is taken on screen. Published guidance describes 25 multiplication questions, with six seconds to enter each answer. It covers multiplication tables up to 12 × 12. Check the current government guidance and your school’s information for arrangements.
What can paper practice do?
Paper gives children room to think, draw and revisit a fact. Our five 25-question MTC-style checks help you review recall, but they do not reproduce the official onscreen interface or its timing.
Prepare without adding pressure
Begin with secure facts, work through a small set of less familiar ones and mix them once confidence grows. Discuss mistakes together. A short session that ends well is a useful place to start next time.
Ask the school about individual needs
Your child’s school can explain the check, its familiarisation activity and any access arrangements. SumSprout cannot advise on individual participation decisions or guarantee a particular result.
